How 3-way and 4-way switch circuits work Controlling a light with two or more switches This page describes how to use 3-way and 4-way switches to control lights from two or more locations. This is the first of several related pages explaining how to control lights with multiple switches. Click here for an overview of all these pages. A light or lights can be controlled by more than one switch. The usual practice in home construction is to use 3-way switches. A 3-way switch is shown below.
How an Electric Light Switch Works
A single-pole switch is the most basic of all electrical switching. When the switch is in the ON position, it completes the circuit and supplies power to the device. When in the OFF position, the switch disconnects power from the device. Note that only the “Hot” wire is broken by the switch, except in very old houses that may switch the neutral instead of the hot wire.
It is similar to the old Dan Armstrong Super Strat wiring setup, but all three switches are 3 position On-On-On toggle switches. If a switch is in the center position, the pickup is off. If the switch is flipped toward the neck, the pickup is on in parallel mode.
A 3- way switch is used on each end with one or more 4- way switches in between the two 3- way switches. It is important to understand how these switches are wired before attempting to troubleshoot or replace. Below is a conventional wiring diagram for a 4- way switch configuration. The diagrams below show the conventional wiring for 3- way switches in a 4- way configuration.
Unfortunately, not all 3- way switches are wired the conventional way. If you have any problems with these switches, it may be best to call an electrician. Conventional 4- Way Switch Wiring 4- way switches have four terminals each with two pairs of travelers one set usually black and one set usually brass color. A four switch configuration will have two 3- way switches, one on each end and two 4- way switches in the middle.
In the diagrams below, the first switch 3- way common terminal connects to line voltage. The first switch 3- way travelers brass color connect to one pair of the second switch 4- way travelers black or brass color. The other pair of the second switch 4- way travelers connect to one pair of the third switch 4- way travelers. The other pair of the third switch 4- way travelers connect to one pair of the fourth switch 3- way travelers.

Adam Franz71 I am trying to install a digital timer on my outside garage lights. The timer has Black, White, Green and Red wires. There is only One switch for the outside Garage lights and BOTH wires on the 15a v switch are Black which is unlike the diagram on this page. The foyer lights and interior garage lights are also on this same circuit.
Is it possible to install the timer and if so how should I go about it. Anonymous The circuit in this example is different that the situation you have. You need to connect your timer as such. Duane Hello, I have a similar situation however it is wired exactly as it is in the digram. Can it still be done?

If the user is unable to perform electrical work themselves, a qualified electrician should be consulted. However, some older metal boxes and most plastic boxes don’t have a terminal like this.
Conductors include wires, devices like switches and receptacles, and some other metal parts. Check here to calculate the number of conductors allowed in a box before adding new wiring, etc. Three-way switches allow for controlling a light fixture from two separate locations, these are usually used at the top and bottom of a flight of stairs or at two different entrances to a room.

They’re often used by car audio and customization enthusiasts as a way to control equipment like lights, fans and amplifiers, while adding a bit of style to the installation. If you can strip some wire, installing a lighted rocker switch is a pretty straightforward job. Step 1 Cut your ground wires to length. You’ll need two ground wires. The first ground wire must be long enough to reach from the power source usually a battery to the “gnd” connection on the switch.
The second ground wire must be long enough to reach from what you’re powering like a light to the battery. Use insulated or gauge wiring, colored black, for the ground wires. Measure the distances for the wires you’ll need and cut them to length with wire cutters. Step 2 Cut your power wires to length. You’ll need two power wires. The first power wire must be long enough to reach from the power source usually a battery to the “acc” connection on the switch.
The second power wire must be long enough to reach from what you’re powering like a light to the “power” connection on the switch. Use insulated or gauge wiring, colored red, for the ground wires. Wiring schematic Connect your first power wire from the terminal of what you’re powering to the switch’s “power” connection.

How do you hook-up or wire up one light with two on-off switches? For information on how to hook-up one light with two on-off switches, see the Related link “How to wire 3-way and 4-way switches, including wiring diagrams”, shown below. When using the correct size wire, there are severa…l possible configurations of power connection, lighting outlet, and the two 3-way switches. Power can come from the panel to one switch or the other, or to the light, whichever is convenient.
The light can be physically positioned between the switches or at the end of the two-switch series. Each configuration requires different handling of the hot, switched travelers, and neutral wires. In every case, there are runs that require three parallel conductors, whether for neutral, hot or travelers, not including any grounding wires.
A 3-wire cable is highly recommended for this application. If there are more than two switch locations , a 4-way switch goes between the 3-way switches to crossover the two travelers. Two 3-conductor cables are used for this portion, including a bypass connection for the un-switched hot.

Edit Answer for another 13 minutes Whether this is a DIY job depends on your electrical wiring capabilities. Two common ways to approach this with a can light – a photocell switch installed in-line with the light, which measures actual outside light and automatically turns lights on and off. Can be fixed sensor type, which tend to turn on at start of dusk and turn off only when daylight is fairly bright, or adjustable for a few bucks more so you can adjust sensitivity.
I recommend former for long life, latter if you have exposure to fairly bright street lights or it will be in a well-shaded spot, to be able to control undesirable on or off bahavior. Has to be positioned, obviously, where the porch light does not illuminate it or the light will turn it off, so typically means running new wiring through the wall to a location for the photocell switch, then back to the box to connect to the run to the lights themselves. If you may be running LED or CFL bulbs in the fixture anything but regular filament-type bulbs be sure to get the type rated for that – requires an additional wire from the box to the sensor to power the sensor, because the hot-only lead type drain a bit of power out of the lighting circuit to power the sensor, which causes electronic controlled bulbs like LED’s and CFL’s to continually try to start up because of the low power flow in the circuit, which burns them out very quickly.
Some fancier ones like this one with calendar – http: Most of these type switches will fit in an existing deep single-switch box but in many cases not shallow boxes. Can be a real mess if the lead wires were cut short so do not fit with a larger box size – in that case you commonly end up having to install a separate box for the new switch, which can look funny next to a gang box.

Because you are replacing the switch, not installing a new switch, you can get away without a ground. You should install a nonconducting, noncombustible faceplate though. Where no means exists within the snapswitch enclosure for connecting to the equipment grounding conductor or where the wiring method does not include or provide an equipment grounding conductor, a snap switch without a connection to an equipment grounding conductor shall be permitted for replacement purposes only.
A snap switch wired under the provisions of this exception and located within reach of earth, grade, conducting floors, or other conducting surfaces shall be provided with a faceplate of nonconducting, noncombustible material or shall be protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter.

The switch is hooked to the hook-ups on the motor. The lights will only light up when the power is sent to the motor. Locate on the vehicle where you would like the switch.
If you hook more than one speaker up to a single channel, it will lower the impedence and will damage the amp. You can hook up multiple speakers by using a speaker switch .
