Xochimilco within the Federal District View of part of the main plaza of the center of Xochimilco The borough of Xochimilco was created in , when the federal government reorganized the Federal District of Mexico City into sixteen boroughs. The Xochimilco borough was centered on what was the city of Xochimilco, which had been an independent settlement from the pre-Hispanic period to the 20th century. While officially part of the city, its identity is more like a suburb. It is the third largest borough, after Tlalpan, and Milpa Alta. These offices are located on Calle Guadalupe I. Ramirez 4, in the El Rosario area. It was later donated to the San Bernardino de Siena monastery. After the monastery was secularized, it became hacienda land again, but over time, parts were sold and it became the current area of Xochimilco. The church for this community was built in as the hacienda chapel. It officially became a sanctuary in , declared by the archbishop of Mexico.

Andersonville Commercial Historic District A row of houses in the Lakewood Balmoral Historic District The Saint Ita Catholic Church bell tower, on Broadway, has long been used by community residents and businesses as the symbol of Edgewater on signage and other media. Once a sleepy little village made up primarily of Swedish immigrants, the community is particularly known for its diversity, including a continued Swedish cultural presence led by the Swedish American Museum and other Swedish businesses.
Many of Andersonville’s Swedes were carpenters, contractors and architects, and played a significant role in building the city. Andersonville is also known for its unique commercial district, made up almost entirely of a variety of independent locally owned specialty shops, restaurants, and service providers. The approximate street boundaries of Andersonville, as defined by the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, are Lawrence N to the south, Victoria N to the north, Ravenswood W to the west, and Magnolia W to the east.
The heart of the Andersonville commercial district is the corner of Clark St. Andersonville’s roots as a community extend well back into the 19th century, when immigrant Swedish farmers started moving north into what was then a distant suburb of Chicago. In the s the area north of Foster and east of Clark was a large cherry orchard, and families had only begun to move into the fringes of what is now Andersonville. The neighborhood’s first school, the Andersonville School, was built in at the corner of those two thoroughfares, and served as the area’s primary school until After the Great Chicago Fire of , wooden homes were outlawed in Chicago.
Swedish immigrants, who could not afford to build homes of stone or brick, began to move outside of the city’s northern limits.
