Wasted spark with multiple coils It can also support coil per plug in some installs. For wasted spark you require a minimum of single “missing tooth” crank wheel, only engines with an even number of cylinders being supported. You need at least for 4cyl, for 6cyl or for 8cyl. However, the wheel is probably the easiest to obtain. The MS ECU can drive up to 6 seperate spark outputs, meaning it can run up to a 12 cylinder in wasted spark mode. For a distributor based setup with a trigger wheel, simply follow all of the wheel decoder instructions but rather than setting SparkB, C, etc as outputs as in a wasted spark setup only set LED17 as SparkA output and ensure all other spark outs are NOT set: The downside is that it is more difficult than EDIS and requires extra software settings. If you are buying a pre-assembled Megasquirt your vendor will be able to do this for you. Before setting up the wheel decoder, several questions should be asked: This matters because the camshaft turns half a revolution for every crank revolution.

Cant get any hits with the search function. If so, and you have a stock ignition The tach will connect to the coil. There should be two screw connections and one will have two pink wires. That is the connection that you connect to one of the pink wires run up to the indicator lights and light power for the speedo connects to for wiring up a tach. If you have an after market ignition, as long as its a dual fire, you can hook up the same way.

Remove the distributor cap, right valve cover and the 4 cyl rocker arms and pedestal. Set up a dial gauge on the 4 intake push rod. Rotate the engine to TDC 1 cylinder. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is right. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is retarded or your chain is streched. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is to far advanced.
These s are for stock engines and wouldn’t work for engines with aftermarket cams. By inducing high voltage in the tube, the gas is ionized and thereby lights up. In the case of plug wires glowing, the Corona effect can happen when atmospheric conditions are right.
Does anyone know how to use a OLD sears dwell tachometer?
How to Hook Up a Tach Dwell Meter by Robert Bayly A tach-dwell meter is a combination electronic device that measures engine rpm as a tachometer and ignition point dwell angle. The tachometer function is self-explanatory; it measures engine speed in revolutions per minute. The dwell function measures the degrees of distributor rotation that ignition points are closed and is directly related to ignition point gap.
In fact, the ignition point gap can be set by adjusting the dwell angle.

The different knob positions just changes what it reads. The tach part measures the opening cycle of the points and gives you the rpm. Dwell setting measures the amount of time the points are closed and reads out in degrees. The points setting is an ohm meter. It measures the resistance of the points being closed and it’s needle tells you when the points are good or bad if the condenser is bad or the coil is bad. You set the points like normal at. That is the max opening at the top of the cam.

You should always uninstall MegaTune before installing a newer version. You can uninstall MegaTune in three ways: Follow the directions and MegaTune will be removed. This document covers only the MegaSquirt-II hardware and v2. For other configurations, please see the developer’s site. At the top of this page is a list of all the menu items in MegaTune 2.
It’s a combination HEI battery/tach pigtail that has a connector for both power to the HEI and the connection for the tach, molded together. A tach wire connector isn’t needed if using an MSD box that has a separate tach hook-up; in that case use just a stock-type HEI power supply pigtail.

Presync first then set screws then sync again, this time for engine condition. You can presync using 4 very small drill bits of equal size. Bike tach really not accurate enough to set idle, you do it more with ear than anything else. I listen at pipe outlet a bunch doing it. You have have 3 cylinders in such a way that they support the 4th and idle speed does not change but idle quality DOES.
Memory is an old friend that will let you down when you need it most. I’ve got a different brand that I’ve not used since ’78 when I changed my ’68 Elcamino to electronic distributor. Ken, I am just going by memory not as good as it used to be and have not used mine since the 80s. I am surprised they are still selling them. I bought mine new off the Mac truck over 30 years ago. Kevin – They’re sold on the big auction site. Amazon has it listed but not in stock.
Justin, What you have is a dwell meter. It is used to set the points on a running engine. That is why the old GM engines had little doors on the distributor cap to adjust the points. The way it works is the black wire goes to ground and the green one goes to the – side of the coil. There should be another switch to set it for the number of cylinders, It should say like or like mine is just

Jan 05, · I have an old Sears dwell-tach meter that has two leads. One clip is red the other black. Anyone know where to hook this up to check rpm’s?.
It doesn’t care what voltage you’re using nor does it give a whit about the polarity hook the red wire to the hot side. Maybe in my next life I’ll spend more money on one and worry about it more, lol. The vacuum meter is telling the tale, though, and is what you want to address. I’m assuming you’re using the tube-type that sits on top of the carb and has a ball that floats inside it.
These are great tools but you must realize they are the epitome of an analog meter in that what they measure flow only relative to themselves and because of this you must use only one for each set of carbs; if you set two meters on two carbs the readings would have nothing to do with each other. Use just one meter for both carbs because you’re measuring fluid flow and you want to be able to compare the readings.
What I’ve always done is get the engine running with both needle valves open the same number of turns, then used that as a base.
How to Use a Tach Dwell Meter by Jeffrey Caldwell A dwell meter is used to check the dwell angle on vehicles with a points-type ignition. Dwell angle is the length of time measured by the degree of rotation of the distributor cam the contact points open on a points-type ignition system. Points-type ignition systems were commonly used on vehicles manufactured before the mid s. The dwell angle must be periodically checked on these vehicles to ensure proper operation of the ignition system.
In addition, the dwell angle on these vehicles must be checked before setting the ignition timing.
Jan 23, · I purchased a Sears dwell tach meter and it has 2 leads. I can get the tach to work by hooking blk to neg and red to the coil. What is the hookup procedure for measuring “Dwell”.
Reply I may the only person in the world that followed Holley’s suggestion to remove extra wires from 2 harnesses provided but now I find that I cannot go back. By that I mean originally I wired for a standard points system and since moved to a mag distributor and want the sniper to control timing. There is no information about color and placement that I can find. I have been on infinite hold trying to get the information and gave up. So I decided to post on the forum thinking that they would chime in but instead I got the usual ‘call tech support’.
Could you post a pic of both plugs showing color and location on the plugs. I would think it would useful information. Now, you already have a connector, but on that page are a picture of the connector as well as a list of the various signals and the pin letter into which they go. If you look very closely at the connector there should be a letter on each pin.

The following instructions are for creating a MegaSquirt to Relay Board cable. It is for those who are creating their own harness. With both boxes mounted, measure the distance between them from DB connector to DB connector – this will be the length that you will cut the individual wires. If you are not using a Relay Board, allow enough length in each of your wires to reach the target component.
It is often better to be too long and trim afterwards, than to be too short and have to splice additional lengths on. For a Relay Board cable, you can move both heat shrink pieces to the center of the wire length, and then twisting the center of the wire with a few twists to hold the heat shrink in place, so that it does not fall off the wire or run down while soldering the connection.
Yes, but the dwell meter is by far the best and easiest way on a Chevy.
Maximum Dwell Duration This is in your ‘C: Edit the following line with Notepad. Note that since the optoisolator U4 inverts the trigger signal, you specify ‘Rising edge’ for the ‘Input Capture’ in the tuning software, which refers to the signal at the processor. Positive trigger offsets are used to specify the number of degrees before top dead center BTDC , negative numbers are used for triggers that occur after top dead center ATDC.
At each reference pulse, the period between it and the previous reference pulse is calculated. The difference is used with a time interpolation technique to set up the timing pulse for the next ignition event. Specifically, the reference period is added to the time of the current pulse, a calculated amount subtracted for the advance, another amount subtracted for the dwell to determine the rise time. When the signal is pulled low, current stops, the magnetic field in the coil collapses, and a spark is produced.
However, the low to high transition is not used to determine when coil charging begins, instead the MSD box controls this itself. Thus, the HEI module fires on the ‘trailing edge’ of the advance signal.
