The first step to replacing a power supply or any other component in a PC is to unplug the power cable from the back of the power supply. The socket for the power cord is above the screwdriver in the picture. The next step is to remove the cover from the case, which varies like crazy from brand to brand. On a standard midtower case like this one, you only need to remove a side cover, the one on the opposite side of the power supply fan grille than the cord socket and switch. The cover is already removed in this pictures two screws and it slides right out. Finally, we get to removing the screws that hold the ATX power supply in place. After removing the four mounting screws from the old PC power supply, I moved it out of the way on top of the drive cage.

But the problem is, I can’t afford a power supply that can provide enough amps through a single 12v rail. If I buy a power supply that has dual 12v rails, can I wire them together in order to provide enough amps to the TEC? I won’t have anything else hooked to this power supply, only the TEC. Thanks in advance for the help!!! I have to disagree with waht on this one.

Aug 28,  · The same thing happened to me with the GIGABYTE GA-EPUD3R and the same ram, case and processor. I ended up taking everything out except for the processor video card and 1 .

This makes them suitable targets for the electronic scavenger, as parts can more easily be retrieved intact. Parts, Parts, Parts Most obvious when dismantling one of these boxes are the metal case, IEC connector, power switch, and fan. If you look at the components on the PCB, many of them are standard discretes. Just a selection of ATX power supply magnetics and cores. Toroidal chokes and ferrite bobbins used in filters as well as the various ferrite cored transformers.

The transformers are wound for the specific purpose so unless you have the patience to rewind them they may be of little use, but the chokes have more application. These are not exotic RF ferrites but more utilitarian iron-dust cores, though they still can find plenty of use wherever a choke is required. The semiconductors in an ATX PSU include some specialist components, but there are still alternative applications for them.

On the high voltage side are a selection of high-voltage diodes and those switching transistors, all of which are a fertile source of parts if you are hacking together high voltage inverters.

It should work fine, even given its dubious provenance. Winter versus summer should not make a big difference. The largest power draw is during the heat up phase. In winter, the bed will use slightly more power to stay warm, but regardless of whether it is summer or winter the peak power draw during heat up will be the same.

In , CU student Nate Seidle fried a power supply in his dorm room and, in lieu of a way to order easy replacements, decided to start his own company. Since then, SparkFun has been committed to sustainably helping our world achieve electronics literacy from our headquarters in Boulder, Colorado.

I figured using a TIG torch Tungsten electrode shrouded with Argon gas instead of a flux coated rod might give better control especially at the lower voltage and currents where I plan to start testing. TIG welders are commonly used to weld small stainless steel parts and sheet metal. But then I remembered the TIG welder power supply has a high voltage pulse built-in to initiate the plasma arc.

Without that extra kick-start, it might be difficult to strike an arc without damaging the fine pointed tip of the Tungsten electrode. So I decided to just go with a conventional stick welding setup. The fact that PC power supplies put out DC voltage will be an advantage over the more common AC buzz-box arc welders for better stability and producing higher quality welds.

Modifications Obviously, trying to convert a PC power supply into an arc welding power supply will require a few modifications. Here is a quick list of the main challenges I think we will have to overcome. The AX i is designed for relatively quiet operation, which is not an issue when arc welding. To insure we have an excellent flow of cooling air through the power supply I pulled out a monster Delta fan that I had left over from an old water-cooling radiator test system.

This fan is a little thicker 38mm vs. The big Delta air-turbine spins at a constant 8, rpm and sounds like a hair dryer but it moves a lot of air, which will keep all the internal bits well cooled. Better to be safe than sorry.

Before you begin Turn off the computer, disconnect all cables, and transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor. HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer. The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer. This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge ESD.

To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface such as a conductive foam pad , and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Figure Inserting the 20 wire ATX power In addition to the standard 20 wire ATX power connector, this style motherboard also requires an additional 12 V connection. This is implemented as a square four wire connector that is normally located near the CPU.

Charging with a Power Supply Learn how to charge a battery without a designated charger. Batteries can be charged manually with a power supply featuring user-adjustable voltage and current limiting. I stress manual because charging needs the know-how and can never be left unattended; charge termination is not automated.

Because of difficulties in detecting full charge with nickel-based batteries, I recommend charging only lead and lithium-based batteries manually. Lead Acid Before connecting the battery, calculate the charge voltage according to the number of cells in series, and then set the desired voltage and current limit. To charge a volt lead acid battery six cells to a voltage limit of 2. Select the charge current according to battery size.

For lead acid, this is between 10 and 30 percent of the rated capacity. A 10Ah battery at 30 percent charges at about 3A; the percentage can be lower. An 80Ah starter battery may charge at 8A. A 10 percent charge rate is equal to 0. Observe the battery temperature, voltage and current during charge. Charge only at ambient temperatures in a well-ventilated room. Once the battery is fully charged and the current has dropped to 3 percent of the rated Ah, the charge is completed.

Had proprietary requirements when other supplies would be just as good other then not fit. As I recall the XPS series and yes, it’s been a few years since I did computer repair so maybe things have changed since, but Best check that out before you buy any PC supply out there. This used to be a huge problem with Dell systems.

You need motherboard power, CPU power, a connector for the fan complex, plus power to the drives.

While there are several ways to do that, I used two stud mount amp diodes, 1 to each power supply for reverse current blocking, and jacked up each supply’s output voltage enough to compensate for the drop across the diodes.

Here’s some information on using an ATX computer power supply. The ATX is the most common supply out there and is in use in most desktop computers today. This is just general information to help you get started. Not all power supplies are identical. Individual power supply specifications are usually listed on the case. Additional information can be obtained by doing a search for “ATX power supply” on the web. Here’s a link to one site with a lot of good info. The diagram at right shows the main output connector of the power supply when viewed from the end.

The colors represent the different colored wires going into it. Both 5 and 12 volt lines normally deliver ample current for our needs.

Bo Ziffer 6 weeks ago Reply How did you calculate the amps you could draw on each leg 12v, 5v, and 3. What i wanna do is give power to a board wich can handle max 24V A so i’m considering using old ATX but but grabing those 12V lines. MichaelF 8 months ago Reply I don’t think so for more than a slight bit of current. Can’t remember exactly how, but they essentially get piggybacked.

Personally I’d use a 15 ohm 10W resistor myself, but whether that works depends on the particular supply.

By leaving the old power supply connected, installing the new power supply, and then replacing the leads one at a time, it’s nearly impossible to mess up. It’s also a good way to replace the distributor cap on an old car if you don’t know the firing order.

Step 17 – Troubleshooting The next step is installing a power supply and hooking up power to the motherboard. Included with your computer power supply should be at least 4 screws, sometimes more. These are what will hold the power supply in place. If it didn’t come with screws, borrow a few from the bag of screws that came with the motherboard.

You will always end up with extra screws. I put them in a small bag and store them with the rest of the component materials in a small box. Slide the computer power supply into the case, and secure it with the four screws. These go in from the outside of the computer, on the back. Next, find the main ATX power cable. Connect this into the ATX power supply connection on the motherboard.

Next, connect the 4 Pin power cable to the motherboard. Optional If your computer power supply and motherboard came with a 2X ATX power connection, you should connect that now as well. These are higher end CPU’s, so most setups will not use this. See label “E” on the motherboard diagram for the location of this connection This is a good time to verify your pc power supply setting.
