The first step to replacing a power supply or any other component in a PC is to unplug the power cable from the back of the power supply. The socket for the power cord is above the screwdriver in the picture. The next step is to remove the cover from the case, which varies like crazy from brand to brand. On a standard midtower case like this one, you only need to remove a side cover, the one on the opposite side of the power supply fan grille than the cord socket and switch. The cover is already removed in this pictures two screws and it slides right out. Finally, we get to removing the screws that hold the ATX power supply in place. After removing the four mounting screws from the old PC power supply, I moved it out of the way on top of the drive cage.

But the problem is, I can’t afford a power supply that can provide enough amps through a single 12v rail. If I buy a power supply that has dual 12v rails, can I wire them together in order to provide enough amps to the TEC? I won’t have anything else hooked to this power supply, only the TEC. Parts, Parts, Parts Most obvious when dismantling one of these boxes are the metal case, IEC connector, power switch, and fan. If you look at the components on the PCB, many of them are standard discretes. Just a selection of ATX power supply magnetics and cores. Toroidal chokes and ferrite bobbins used in filters as well as the various ferrite cored transformers.
The transformers are wound for the specific purpose so unless you have the patience to rewind them they may be of little use, but the chokes have more application. These are not exotic RF ferrites but more utilitarian iron-dust cores, though they still can find plenty of use wherever a choke is required. The semiconductors in an ATX PSU include some specialist components, but there are still alternative applications for them.
On the high voltage side are a selection of high-voltage diodes and those switching transistors, all of which are a fertile source of parts if you are hacking together high voltage inverters.

I figured using a TIG torch Tungsten electrode shrouded with Argon gas instead of a flux coated rod might give better control especially at the lower voltage and currents where I plan to start testing. TIG welders are commonly used to weld small stainless steel parts and sheet metal. But then I remembered the TIG welder power supply has a high voltage pulse built-in to initiate the plasma arc.

Had proprietary requirements when other supplies would be just as good other then not fit. Personally I’d use a 15 ohm 10W resistor myself, but whether that works depends on the particular supply.
By leaving the old power supply connected, installing the new power supply, and then replacing the leads one at a time, it’s nearly impossible to mess up. It’s also a good way to replace the distributor cap on an old car if you don’t know the firing order.
Step 17 – Troubleshooting The next step is installing a power supply and hooking up power to the motherboard. Included with your computer power supply should be at least 4 screws, sometimes more. These are what will hold the power supply in place. If it didn’t come with screws, borrow a few from the bag of screws that came with the motherboard.
